Feed‐food competition in global aquaculture: Current trends and prospects

چکیده

Feed-food competition is the allocation of resources that can be used to feed humans animal instead, a current but unsustainable practise not well documented for aquaculture. Here, we analysed feed-food in aquaculture using two measures; natural trophic levels (TLs) and species-specific human-edible protein conversion ratios (HePCRs). The HePCR equals ratio human edible (input) produce (output). To provide prospects on aquaculture's potential convert inedible by-products into biomass, data production were collected categorized based TLs. HePCRs computed four species produced intensive systems: Atlantic salmon, common carp, Nile tilapia whiteleg shrimp. Under use, estimated shrimp considered net contributors by requiring ~0.6 kg 1 fillet/meat. Considering soya bean meal fishmeal as food-competing ingredients increased ~2 turned all case-study consumers protein. prevent this increase, use high-quality such fishmeal, or products should minimized feed. In future, role circular food systems will most likely consist balanced mix at different TLs from systems, depending available.
